Explore Kham and Eastern Tibet: Self-drive overland from Chengdu to Yushu

Route: Chengdu – Leshan – Kangding – Tagong – Xinduqiao – Litang – Yarchen Gar – Palyul – Dege – Shiqu – Yushu – return flight to Chengdu

DAY1：Chengdu -Leshan – Ya’an

Visit:

Leshan Giant Buddha: is the main attraction in Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, which was listed as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996 together with Mount Emei. Located at the joint of Minjiang River, Dadu River and Qingyi River, Leshan Giant Buddha is sitting facing Leshan City across the river and it’s the largest cliff rock carving Maitreya Buddha statue in the world.

Shangli ancient town: In history the old town was the important entrance of the South Silk Road and it is believed by the local that the town is a cornucopia because of its location at the intersection angle of two rivers.

DAY2: Ya’an – Kangding – Tagong

Visit: Standing 3730 meters above sea level, Tagong means “a favorite place of Bodhisattva” in Tibetan. To explore Tagong of Sichuan’s wild west, you will encounter the pristine grassland against lofty snow-capped mountains, the alpine lakes, the exotic nomads, the monastery, the dense forest, as well as the mysterious Tibetan culture.

DAY3: Tagong – Xinduqiao – Litang

Visit: Xinduqiao photography Road: is the fascinating “photography paradise”, located in the crossroad between south line and north line of 318 State Road, which is like poetic Shangri-La. Astonishing sunlight, boundless grasslands, winding brooks, polar trees with yellow leaves, mountainous peaks, scattered Tibetan villages, cows and sheep grazing peacefully……you can see beautiful landscape of plateau in west Sichuan. This is Xinduqiao, the fascinating “world of sunlight and shadow” and “paradise of photographers”.

This temple was built in 1580, is the Kang region’s oldest and largest Yellow Sect of Tibetan Buddhism temple, is the Kham region of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism holy land. Yarchen Gar: The monastery is associated with the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism . With more than 10,000 Sangha members now, it’s the largest concentration of nuns and monks in the world. Most of the Sanghas are nuns.

Visit:

Dege Sutra-Printing House:  The house enshrines more than 320,000 Tibetan printing blocks, including religion, history, literature, art, medicine, astronomy and calendars. Dege engraving printing technology was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Visit: Bage Mani Stone Wall:  Since Sangye Phuntsok the first Bage Rinpoche laid the first Mani stone on the Tashikhar grassland in 1671, countless pilgrims around the country have visited and added holy stones to the site. The result is a wall that stretches 1.75 kilometers in length and stands about 3.5 meters high, embedded with more than 3,000 stone statues and over 6,000 Buddhist scriptures including Kangyur and Tangyur.
